The beginnings of what would become Protea starts when songwriters Josh Mitchell and Kelly Staten met in Traverse City, MI. Mitchell recently relocated back to his hometown after a 10-year stint touring out of Nashville, TN while Staten ended up moving from downstate.
The two met at a coffee shop and began writing songs together shortly after. It wasn’t long before the two were playing shows locally and loving it.
After seeing Jonny Tornga at their very first show, they recruited him almost straight away. Torgna also recently returned to Northern Michigan after years of touring out of his home base of New York, NY. With Mitchell performing vocals, guitar and keys, and Staten performing vocals, bass and keys as well, Tornga completed the trio as drummer and digital percussionist.
With the lineup finally formed, Protea ended up recording their self-titled album fairly quickly and have been performing and writing new music ever since.

Saw Protea at The Coinslot twice and they deliver a great show between the vocals, mix, song selection and more. Josh was even playing with a busted hand one time and still sounded great.
